【英語・英文学・英文科】ジョージ・オーウェル、Animal Farm(動物農園)の解説、和訳⑪

初回から数えて11回目になります。今回は農場主だったジョーンズさんが反撃にやってきます。帝政ロシアの反撃とソ連の勝利のメタファーになります。実際のロシア革命もまた、多くの血を流した革命です。白馬のモーリーの動きに注目です。

Early in October, when the corn was cut and stacked and some of it was already threshed, a flight of pigeons came whirling through the air and alighted in the yard of Animal Farm in the wildest excitement.

十月の初旬、とうもろこしが収穫されて積み上げられ一部は脱穀まで済まされた頃、鳩の一群が風を巻き上げて飛来し興奮しながら動物農場の庭に降り立った。

Jones and all his men, with half a dozen others from Foxwood and Pinchfield, had entered the five−barred gate and were coming up the cart−track that led to the farm.

ジョーンズとその下男たち、そしてフォックスウッドとピンチフィールドから来た半ダースの人間たちが門を通って農場に続く小道を上ってきたのだ。

They were all carrying sticks, except Jones, who was marching ahead with a gun in his hands.

銃を手にして先頭を歩くジョーンズさん以外は皆、棒切れを携えている。

明らかに彼らは農場を取り返すつもりだった。

This had long been expected, and all preparations had been made.

これはずいぶん前から予想されていたことだった。そして準備は既に整っていた。

Snowball, who had studied an old book of Julius Caesar’s campaigns which he had found in the farmhouse, was in charge of the defensive operations.

農場内の家屋から見つけた古いジュリアス・シーザーの軍事作戦の本を研究したスノーボールが防御作戦を担当した。

He gave his orders quickly, and in a couple of minutes every animal was at his post.

彼は速やかに命令を出し数分のうちに全ての動物が持ち場についた。

Even the cat suddenly leapt off a roof onto a cowman‘s shoulders and sank her claws in his neck, at which he yelled horribly.

あの猫でさえ突然屋根から農場主の肩に飛び降りるとその首筋に爪を立て、農場主は恐ろしいほどに悲鳴をあげた。

実際にモリーはどこにもいなかった。

考察：暴力革命の対義語は平和革命や無血革命と言うらしいです。Wikipediaによると。日本は革命というより、大政奉還という形で似たようなことがおこりましたね。時の政権から権力を移動させる際、暴力を使う方法は効率的なのだろうかと、個人的には考えてしまいます。

英語豆知識：five−barred gateは日本語にすると、せいぜい農場の門という意味しかないです。調べてみると、“a wide gate consisting of five horizontal bars and usually one or two bars going from corner to corner”「平行な5本の棒と、両端に斜めに走る1～2本の棒から成る門」だそうです。英英辞典は説明が長いので、個人的には使っていまっせん。
